A seismograph for gender violence

The full electronics and enclosure for the gender violence installation are finally done. Here’s what I’m hesitantly calling the final version:

The design is loosely inspired by old seismographs and other recording instruments of that era, like this 1930s barograph: an ink nib tracing a line onto a slowly turning drum of paper, under glass. They register every rumbling as it happens, even the ones you never feel.

That’s the feeling I want to recreate. Gender violence is mostly invisible too: it happens behind closed doors, rarely gets reported, and rarely makes the news. Yet it never stops. On average there’s a new victim in Belgium every 12 minutes. The installation is meant to be a measuring instrument that picks up those tremors in real time and leaves a trace on paper, one ticket at a time.

Next up: taking some proper photos for the work page.
